This was an ambitious project. Kodachrome was discontinued in June of 2009, and the final roll was developed December 30th, 2010 in Kansas at Dwayne’s Photo…until we were able to source some old rolls of Kodachrome 64 ourselves, and produced color images from it.
We acquired five roll of expired Kodachrome 64 in 2024 and stored it. After finding a partner lab to work with on this project, we then built out our scene. We photographed a color card at various exposures across 72 photos (two rolls, with the other three in reserve). It took 6 months with our partner lab to get images off of it. How we got it off the film stays in the lab. Only one exposure really made it, and that was all we needed.
This preset reproduces the colors we were able to get off of our scene, cutting through the expired color shift. We have nearly three-thousand Kodachrome slides from the 1940’s through 1990’s that we studied across many scenes to best understand Kodachrome 64.
It’s a bit of a wild preset, but that’s what makes it fun. If you were a photographer from the Kodachrome era, especially the original Kodachrome or Kodachrome II (before cameras had meters), you’d likely be bracketing your photos with two to four additional versions just to be safe. With this preset, you may have to play with the exposure or contrast to really dial in a look that speaks to you.
It’s our hope that you enjoy this preset for what it is - a genuine nod and honor to one of the greatest film-stocks ever made.

Most Portra 400 presets flatten all of that into a generic "filmy" look. We built this one differently. We studied the actual film and dialed in the color response, contrast curve, and grain to behave the way Portra does when you expose it correctly.
It won't replace shooting a roll, but it's the most honest digital version we could make. And a decade of shooting Portra 400 ourselves and scanning roll after roll affirm it. A mixed gallery of VGCO Portra 400 and the real thing would be mostly indistinguishable to the untrained eye.
